Alexx Rocks Out with Ringo Starr

Alex and Ringo Starr make peace signs

“ Never stop – that’s the deal. ”

- Ringo Starr

Who hasn’t wanted to play a drum riff with Ringo Starr? A 17-year-old musician’s wish led to that dream coming true – and he got to keep the drums from the jam session.

Alexx has been a fan of Ringo Starr since the second grade—that’s when his parents gave him an old Beatles tape. He not only liked it, he started to play the drums at the age of 8.

The young drummer made good progress until his then undiagnosed brain cancer began to destroy his focus. During his treatment, Alexx took a break from the drums, but he resumed lessons three years ago. He now attends the Ivy Street School in Boston, a residential school for adolescents with brain injuries, and takes weekly drum lessons at a local music co-op. Alexx recently played drums to “In My Life” at a recital and sang “Octopus's Garden,” a song written by Starr, at his school’s talent show.

The legendary Beatles drummer granted Alexx’s wish to meet him at the Hard Rock Café in Hollywood, Calif. on March 31.

After greeting Alexx with a hug, Starr led his young admirer on a tour of the restaurant’s rock-n-roll memorabilia. One of the mementos displayed is a drum head, split through the center that Starr donated to Hard Rock. The split happened during a performance, he recalled, but he kept playing anyway. “Never stop – that’s the deal,” Starr said.

Starr presented Alexx with his own Ludwig drum kit and the pair rocked out together to christen the new instruments.
